Well Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20
The Well is a health-oriented downtown hotel with boutique amenities. Some of the rooms feature exercise bikes and the restaurant serves excellent health juices and well-designed food therapy menus, both Thai and western, and there’s a spa, a pool, a gym offering free fitness sessions.
Style and Character
The Well Hotel is located in two towers, the Memory Wing and the Welcome Wing, one in an older refurbished building, the other in a brand new structure, connected by a seventh-floor bridge. The ambience is poppy, bright and informal; grey and orange tones dominate, and there is a touch of classic Art Deco thrown into the mix.
Service and Facilities
Service is excellent – switched on, not too formal and very helpful. There’s a small saltwater pool, a well-equipped gym with a sauna, and a spa with four treatment rooms offering foot, oil and Thai massages on the seventh floor. The gym offers a range of free sports classes, including Muay Thai cardio work-outs along with sexy abs and body weight sessions. The Well Hotel also offers cooking classes on a dedicated open-air terrace where visitors can familiarise themselves with freshly grown Thai herbs. A gift shop on the ground floor sells souvenirs and dried fruits.
Rooms
The standard rooms are compact and somewhat plain but very comfortable with large TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, a minibar and safe as well as USB chargers. It’s possible to hook up mobile devices and computers to the TV with HDMI cables. Furnishings have Art Deco touches and everything is in top condition, including immaculate if small bathrooms. The larger executive rooms and suites feature yoga mats, exercise balls and spinning bikes.
Food and Drink
The in-house restaurant serves a good selection of Thai and western standards but it is the food therapy menu that stands out. Numerous health-conscious sets with creative names such as the stress & anxiety set, the office syndrome set and the computer vision syndrome set. The period pain set includes avocado salad with pumpkin seeds and quinoa along with baked salmon crusted with cashew nuts and broccoli, and is excellent.
The health juices too are very good, with an emphasis on the right selection of powerful ingredients rather than taste, definitely recommended for raw food lovers and vegetable aficionados. Breakfast is a decent buffet affair, the juices once again being the highlight.
Value for Money
Double rooms from 3150 Baht (£72) in low season; and from 5903 Baht (£135) in high. Breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi.
Family-Friendly?
While the Well Hotel is more suitable for couples, the restaurant boasts a kids’ menu, and baby cots, extra beds and babysitters can be arranged.
Location
Located in walking distance (or a short and free hourly shuttle ride) of the sky train and underground stations at Asoke and close to Terminal 21, Emporium and Em Quartier shopping centres as well as numerous eateries and bars, the Well Hotel is well placed for visitors keen to enjoy Bangkok’s downtown delights.
