Wat Mung Muang

Wat Mung Muang This temple is really worth visiting due to its fantastic miracle.

Dating back to the Second World War, there was a bombing in Chiang Rai Province; however, Wat Mung Muang was free from harm. It was possibly because there houses two-color Buddha image or Phra Chao Song See, a holy Buddha image in Chiang Rai which was highly respected by all villagers. Besides, the temple is in the tricycle (Samlor) route of Chiang Rai's 9-temple trip.Wat Mung Muang belongs to Maha Nikai Buddhist Monastic Order. It was constructed in 1839 and was granted Wisung Khama Sima on December 5, 1866.

Although the history of the temple is still unclear, it can be predicted, from the temple's architecture and ancient remains, that Wat Mung Muang was constructed approximately in the 20th Buddhist era after the construction of Wat Pa Sak, since the art style of Wat Mung Muang was more developed. The most interesting thing to visit is an ancient Lanna-style Chedi, located on the indented square platform which supports the indented lotus-shaped pedestal for Buddha image. Above it is the place where Buddha relics are kept. There are also alcoves on all sides which enshrine the Buddha image in Pang Perd Lok posture.

That is the Buddha image is standing straight with his both hands down and a little stretch, while looking ahead. The top of the Chedi has its shape like a round bell with small Chedi decorated at the corner like the Chedi at Wat Pa Sak. In addition, there is also a large golden Katyayana for the visitors to worship. Recently, the perfect Buddha's joint relics have been accidentally discovered under the Chedi. They are examined and kept in the temple. The tourists can visit this temple daily from 8 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.Direction: Wat Mung Muang is situated opposite to Wat Phra Buat in the town of Chiang Saen district. From Ha-Yak Por Khun Mengrai intersection, take Utarakit Road, passing Wat Klang Wiang and Tesaban market. The temple is on the left (behind Tesaban market).
