Udee Bangkok
Udee Bangkok is a smart, small and simple hostel on a quiet lane close to Chatuchak, where Asia’s largest outdoor market is. Chinese and Thai design elements, friendly and well-informed management, and safe, clean rooms and dorms, as well as a communal rooftop make for a relaxed and quiet stay.
Style and Character
Owner Wanchai’s motto is "Less is More" and Udee Bangkok is designed and run as straightforward and simply as possible, though there are subtle nods to aesthetics and comfort.
The hostel is located in a Chinese-style house with a small garden forecourt. Chinese and Thai design elements such as a beautiful wooden entrance gate give the hostel a little zen ambience. The reception area is bright, the kitchen is functional and spotless and the seating area on the mezzanine floor is a great place to chat with other guests in the afternoons.
Service and Facilities
Service is relaxed and friendly and owner Wanchai is well versed in the challenges of how to get around the city. He keeps small fliers with information on how to reach the main attractions, in English and in Thai, pinned to a notice board in the reception area that’s covered with a wealth of travel information. Guests can use these notes to bridge the language gap in taxis or on the river ferry.
Udee Bangkok offers a laundry service and guests may use the kitchen to warm food. There are safety lockers but guests have to bring their own locks.
A small library in the reception area is stocked with guidebooks and novels, and a TV, DVD player and a PlayStation are at the guests’ disposal. There are computers available, for a small fee, on the mezzanine floor.
Guests may come and go at any time and there’s no curfew, but people who are not staying are asked to leave after 10pm and parties are kept to modest proportions. Staff are onhand around the clock.
Rooms
Rooms are small, plain and bright, and guests get electronic key cards to enter. The dorms are equally simple – though all bunk beds have their own reading lights and plug points. Both are air-conditioned. The rooms have small and clean bathrooms while the bathroom facilities for the dorms are also in top condition.
Food and Drink
There’s no restaurant. Breakfast consists of Kai Ka Ta (fried egg with sausage and toast), coffee or tea, orange juice and seasonal fruit. Soft drinks, beer, a few snacks and instant noodles are available. Drinking water is free. Pariphat Road, a couple of minutes' walk away, is lined by a wide range of street food stalls in the evenings.

Don Muang airport is also close. A bus to the main sites by the river and Khao San Road takes 30 minutes. In the evenings, there’s a great selection of street food available and the sprawling Chatuchak Weekend Market is in walking distance.
