Octave Rooftop Bar - Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit
Octave Rooftop and Lounge is one of the first rooftop bars on Bangkok's Sukhumvit Road.
It's also more than a place for watching the sunset or having a romantic meal. No rooftop bar in the city has a 360-degree view of Bangkok that matches this, and the top floor of this 3-level venue is one of the highest spots in the city for a party.
Starting on the 45th floor of the Marriot Hotel Sukhumvit, a 3-minute walk from Thong Lo BTS Skytrain Station, Octave Rooftop Bar and Lounge is slightly off the main tourist trail, meaning that it's usually easy to grab a seat at one of Octave’s tables with a view.
Octave Rooftop Bar highlights
Unlike many rooftop bars in Bangkok, which often only have standing spaces, Octave boasts an impressive selection of seating with uninterrupted views of the city. In fact, on every floor, there's nothing but a reinforced sheet of glass between you and the vista. The overall effect is pretty impressive.
The 1st level has a definite lounge feel to it, very laidback and ideal for dinner and groups. There's a mix of nature and industry in the decor, with some antique Thai pottery, plant-covered walls, chunky wooden tables, modern bucket chairs, and neon blue lighting. A DJ plays chillout tunes and the staff are attentive and friendly.
Dining and drinking at Octave Rooftop
The food and drinks menu are each a page long, and it's nice to find that Octave Rooftop doesn't bombard you with so many choices you couldn’t pick. The cocktail selection was creative and included a Bangkok 57, a shot of saffron-infused vodka topped up with champagne. There's also the pink-tinged Bloom Over the Roof, a mojito style blend with a hint of red fruit and the sweetness of elderflower cordial.
There's a selection of local beers wines by the glass. Mocktails to enjoy include the sweet but refreshing mango and ginger Sunset. The food at Octave Rooftop Bar was mostly quick bites and light meals such as chicken wings with a side of sweet chilli dipping sauce, peppered calamari and foie gras terrine on toast.
The view from Octave Rooftop Bar
Head upstairs to find a balcony bar, which is an excellent spot for a bit of contemplation and admiring the view. This is a different view from many other Bangkok rooftops and is skyscraper heavy, stretching all the way to the cranes lining the dock area of the Chao Phraya River and straight along Sukhumvit, with the colourful lights of Baiyoke Tower twinkling in the distance.
Up another floor and you will find the pièce de resistance: a 360-degree rooftop with a circular bar, where the eclectic music ranges from Oasis/Green Day mash-ups to current chart-toppers.
