Luxx XL
The Luxx XL is a quiet boutique hotel in the up-scale Lang Suan area, which is crammed with eateries, bars and music venues. With its bright lobby, small, garden-fringed pool and large simple rooms and suites, the property is the ideal springboard into the city’s hi-so nightlife and shopping.
Style and Character
The entrance door is tall enough to allow an elephant to pass, but once inside, the LuxxXL is far more boutique than palatial. Wooden wall panelling, carpets, plenty of space, the odd antique thoughtfully placed here and there and the small garden pool make for a somewhat impersonal but stylish hotel experience.
Service and Facilities
Service is very informal, friendly and switched on, the young staff are pretty relaxed, always in a good way. The Luxx XL is a hotel to sleep in, not so much a place to hang out. Public areas are limited to a small pool lined by a handful of loungers in a nice garden setting, and the high ceilinged lobby where guests can avail themselves to books and a large selection of DVDs.
Rooms
There’s a neat, minimalist vibe to proceedings. The wood panelled rooms come with hardwood floors, plain modern teak furniture and subtle lighting. Amenities, including televisions and DVD players, are fine, while the sleek and somewhat compact bathrooms - with large tubs - open into the rooms and onto long, narrow balconies. Some of the rooms look rather worn, others have just been refurbished, something worth asking about when checking in.
Food and Drink
The Luxx XL has no restaurant or bar. A simple American breakfast is served by the pool or in a room just above it looking into the garden. There are plenty of eating options in the area from Michelin-starred restaurants to simple street food across the road in Lumphini Park.
Value for Money
Double rooms 2,100 baht (£48) in low season; and from 2,400 baht (£55) in high. Breakfast excluded and costs 270 baht (£6). Free Wi-Fi.
Family-Friendly?
The larger rooms can accommodate a child on a daybed, and for families, two bedroom units are also available. Some rooms have connecting doors.
Location
The Luxx XL is just off Soi Langsuan, an upscale road of residential complexes and smart restaurants and bars, a few minutes’ walk from Lumphini Park, the city’s green lung. The British Embassy is also close by. Chit Lom is the nearest BTS Skytrain station, a 10-inute walk. The Royal Palace and other attractions near the river are around 30 minutes away by taxi.
