Hong Khao Tom Pla Restaurant
Hong Khao Tom Pla is a discreet and long-established restaurant in Phuket Town, named after its famous fish rice porridge speciality.
A discreet Michelin Restaurant in Phuket Town
Behind this modest appearance is a little gem, so good that the Michelin Guide awarded them a ‘Bib Gourmand’, which is a sign of good quality and good value cooking.
If you are a visitor to Phuket, you probably would walk by this yellow house without giving it a second look. The indoor area looks just like any local restaurant, and the outdoor setting is basic with stone benches and tables covered with the usual sponsored red platic sheet. That outside sitting is actually the most interesting, it really reminds you what travelling far from home should be about, especially if local and street food means something to you.
What to Order
The Michelin Guide recommends Tom Yam Khai Pla (sour, spicy soup with seafood and roe) and Pu Phat Phong Ka Ri (crab curry), but we were hungry for something else. We had a truly delicious Pla Tom Buay (fish with sour plum soup) and a Seafood Pad Pong Karee (fish in a creamy curry), and a few prawns to wrap it all. It was really good and cheap!
