Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn

The Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn is a large elegant hotel in Bangkok’s business district, close to the river and main tourist sites. An excellent and quite unique British restaurant and a highly reputable Chinese eatery, a large infinity pool, and a spacious gym round off the picture.

Style and Character

The emphasis is on comfort rather than style, and so the hotel comes across as functional rather than the beautiful. Everything works exceptionally well though, and visitors looking for an international and somewhat anonymous hotel experience are well served at the Eastin Grand.

Service and Facilities

Service is excellent and friendly. The popular infinity pool, surrounded by sun loungers, is large enough for a swim and offers great views of the surrounding cityscape, and there’s a bar with a generous Happy Hour attached. The rattan capsule chairs at the water’s edge are a nice touch. Guests can enjoy great views of the city while they’re burning calories in the well-equipped gym.

Rooms

The 240 bright standard rooms, all with floor-to-ceiling windows, are a good size, clean, functional and in great shape, with walls and carpets in soothing beige and yellow tones. The bathrooms are a bit small but the furnishings are in very good condition and the minibar is well stocked. Slightly larger corner rooms come with huge bathrooms featuring floor to ceiling windows that offer dizzying views of the city from large tubs may leave some guests delighted, others probably feeling a little exposed.

Food and Drink

Chinese Chef Man, popular with Bangkokians, serves excellent Cantonese cuisine, a great variety of dim sum and a great selection of teas. The Glass House offers a dizzying variety of dishes from around the world for its international lunch and dinner buffets.

The hotel’s culinary highlight is Blunos, the brainchild of British chef Martin Blunos, who ran a couple of two-star Michelin restaurants in the UK before coming east. Blunos rides the precarious line of divide between comfort food and fine dining and does so with grace and an Asian twist. The Coco Mint and Pea dip, named after the chef’s daughter, is a spicy and delicious variation on mushy peas and the Peking duck pizza is not bad either.

Poolside is the best place for a pre-dinner drink. Swizzles, the café in the lobby, serves great sandwiches.

Value for Money

Double rooms from 4,000 baht (£92) in low season; from 6,000 baht (£138) in high. Breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi.

Family-Friendly?

Children will love the kids’ pool. The Glass House has a children’s menu and some rooms have connecting doors. Extra beds and nannies can be arranged.

Location

The Eastin is located in the heart of Bangkok’s Sathorn business district. The hotel has its own entrance to the Surasak sky train station and is just one stop away from the Chao Praya River. This puts the Eastin within easy reach of both downtown nightlife and the historical tourist attractions along the river – the Royal Palace, Wat Po and Wat Aroon are a short boat ride away.
