Adventure Hostel Bangkok

Adventure Hostel is located in a refurbished 1960s shop house next to a skytrain station, ideally located for the popular Chatuchak market. Few thrills but very clean dorms and attractive common areas make this hostel a simple base to explore the city from.

Style and Character

The Adventure Hostel, located in a redesigned 1960s shop house, has a definite backpacker vibe but has also managed to integrate old Thai design elements into its artsy look. Much of the wood that was ripped from the building during refurbishment – doors, windows, shutters etc – have been remodelled into the furniture or grace the walls.

Service and Facilities

Service is friendly and facilities are simple. The staff have plenty of advice on where to go and how to get there. An air-conditioned common-area-cum-eating-lounge on the top floor features a large TV screen where guests can watch movies or play games.

In the lobby area, a small boutique sells bags, wallets, scarves etc made from traditional Thai cotton. The rooftop, bordered by greenery, has excellent views into Saphan Kwai skytrain station. Around 70 per cent of the Adventure Hostel is communal for all guests to use, lending it a very sociable feel.

Rooms

There are six air-conditioned dorms throughout the hostel. Guests receive electronic key cards to the dorm they stay in. Some of the bunk beds are doubles and all have personal plugs and reading lights. Bathroom facilities are shared on two floors and are spotlessly clean. The four-bed room can also be rented by couples or families, given the reasonable room rate. There’s a definite youth hostel ambience to the sleeping spaces, in the best sense of the word.

Food and Drink

The Adventure Hostel serves no meals, though there is modest fare on offer in the morning – what the hostel calls a quick-bite breakfast; toast, jam and cereals, tea or coffee. This is not included in the room rate. Beers and soft drinks are available throughout the day. There are plenty of eating options around Saphan Kwai, including a wide variety of street food stalls after 6pm.

Value for Money

Double rooms from 599 Baht (£14) year round, excluding breakfast. Dorm beds from 390 Baht (£7), year round, excluding breakfast. Breakfast here is by item – tea, cereal, toast etc. A full breakfast costs 100 Baht (£2).

Family-Friendly?

The four-bed dorm is popular with families.

Location

Located on the doorstep of Saphan Kwai skytrain station in the north of Bangkok, the hostel is ideally placed for visitors arriving or departing by bus, or wanting to explore the city. Mo Chit bus station, from where long distance buses head north, is close by. Chatuchak weekend market, Asia’s largest outdoor market, is a short stroll away.

The skytrain whisks guests to downtown Bangkok in 20 minutes, and a skytrain and ferry ride will take visitors to the Royal Palace and Wat Po in less than an hour. The journey is thrilling.
