Ginger & The House Shop in Chiang Mai

Shopping can be lots of fun, but nowhere is it more cheery than at The House, where Thai brand Ginger display their colourful range of kitchen-ware, Thai-inspired furniture and clothing.

Anyone who loves to shop will have a field-day here, with so many eye-catching items on display. The House is a beautifully renovated home that makes the perfect backdrop for the bright cushions and funky clothing on display. Set up in 2002 in Chiang Mai it is a daring fusion of Danish and Asian design. They really have fun with their selections and it would be tricky to walk away empty handed. The House Shop can be found on Moon Muang Road at number 199, around a fifteen minute walk from Thae Pae Gate. The shop is open from 10:00 until 22:00 every day.

Ginger’s main store is located in the large whitewashed house in the corner of the small complex. From the moment you step through the antique doors you are bombarded with bold colours. You enter into the kitchenware section of Ginger’s range, which focuses not only on melamine plates, bowls and mugs starting at around 150 baht but pretty aprons and oven gloves. Everything here is vibrant and jolly, from two tone dinner sets in loud, block pinks and greens to more ornately decorated items with a Thai twist: delicate floral patterns, and black and white sketches of tigers and dragons. Head up a short flight of stairs and you are in the soft furnishings department, jam packed with cushions (starting at 950 baht), pouffes and those amazing Thai triangle cushions that unfold into a mattress. Some of the colours in the home section are slightly more muted – but nothing here is for shy and retiring types. On the second floor you will find some beautifully restored wooden antique furniture amongst more cushions.

Towards the back of Ginger you will find the clothing store with clothing lines for men, women and children. The men’s selection includes some fabulous floral patterned shirts, funky ties and great totes decorated in embroidered insects. The colour palette ranges from grass green to deep indigo with hints of mustard yellow. The kids section of the store looks like a candy striped playroom with patchwork rucksacks and plenty of spots, stars and stripes. The women’s collection is split into clothing and an impressive accessories selection, with feathers, diamante and plenty of sparkles. Last but not least, be sure to check out Nomad, the latest addition to the Ginger family. This furniture and homeware store has a much more vintage ethnic vibe, with beautiful trunks, dining chairs and an impressive rocking horse. Once you have tired of all this shopping, check out Ginger Kafe next door. Decorated with the brands signature style they serve a great range of Thai and International dishes, and the restaurant has a reputation in its own right.
