Central Plaza Chiang Mai Airport
Best Shopping Mall in Chiang Mai
Central Airport Plaza Chiang Mai is the place to go for international brands and is also a good stop off point for last-minute souvenirs. Located within walking distance of the airport, there are five floors of shops and restaurants as well as an international supermarket and a cinema here. Open during the week from 10:30 until 21:00 and weekends and holidays from 10:00 until 21:30.
The highlight for most visitors to Central Airport Plaza Chiang Mai is the handicraft and souvenir section. Boutique shops here sell a range of typically Northern Thai souvenirs including silks, clothing, teak trinkets and traditional toys. Although prices tend to be a little higher than those you find at the markets in Chiang Mai, the quality is excellent.
Visitors also come to Central Airport Plaza to visit Tops supermarket, which is located in the basement. If you are looking for international brands from your home country then this is your best bet, with Australian, American and British products. There are also international restaurants here, pizza, fast food chains such as MacDonald’s and of course, a large food court with great value Thai food that starts at 30 baht a dish.
The first and second floors of Central Airport Plaza are dedicated to shops and boutiques, hairdressers and manicurists. The Body Shop is here, but for Thai beauty products check out Harnn, a local boutique that uses herbs and scents from Thailand. Another local store worth checking out is Jaspal, which sells modern men’s and women’s clothing at affordable prices. There’s a decent number of English language soft-backs at Asia Books if you are looking for your next holiday read.
Technology and gadgets are on the third floor where you will find a Sony Center and multi-brand store Jay Mart, which focuses on mobile phones. There are also some small stalls who can unlock phones or make repairs. Samsung, LG, Hewlett Packard and Apple products are available here.
If you are travelling with family then there are plenty of kid-friendly restaurants and for a couple of hours of quiet, the top floor has a seven screen cinema that shows both Thai movies and international films with their original soundtrack and Thai subtitles. Another relaxing option on the top floor is the Relaxation Spa and Massage where you can enjoy traditional Thai massage, oil massages and reflexology.
There are plenty of public vans, taxis and tuk tuks which go to and from the mall, and from the centre of the old town it’s around 15 minutes drive. If you are staying near the Amora Thapae, Imperial Mae Ping, Centara Duangtawan, D2, Suriwong Hotel, Royal Princess, Empress and Holiday Inn hotels you can make the most of the hourly shuttle bus service which runs during the day, ask the hotel reception for more details.
Central Airport Plaza Chiang Mai is the best western style shopping experience in the city, and is a great place for any rainy days, with the highlight for most visitors to Chiang Mai being the traditional stalls that sell products from Northern Thailand.
