Black Rock Viewpoint in Phuket
Black Rock Viewpoint is challenging to get to but certainly worth the effort.
To get there, hike up into the rainforest above Ao Sane Beach to enjoy a stunning view to the south of Phuket, including Nai Harn Beach, Phromthep Cape and Koh Man. This little-known viewpoint, known as Pa Hin Dam in Thai, was totally unheard of before 2016.
Black Rock Viewpoint looks like a large terrace made of soil above the cliff. It features a huge black granite stone – hence its name. The outstanding view and the remoteness of the place – you’re in the jungle, after all – gives you a rewarding feeling due to the difficulty of the journey.
Getting to Black Rock Viewpoint
To get to the viewpoint, take the trail that leads to Nui Beach. It starts a few hundred metres to the right after Karon Viewpoint when heading south toward Rawai/Nai Harn. Unless you ride a real off-road motorcycle, you’ll have to leave your bike at the parking lot where the Nui Beach truck waits to transfer beachgoers.
Two trails leave from the parking lot; 1 going down to Nui Beach in front of you and 1 going up to the left. The latter is the one you have to follow. Bring a bottle of water and some snacks with you and get ready for a steep 1-km hike. You have to turn right some 250 metres after the parking lot, then carry on for another 600 metres on this trail before you see a signboard that indicates the entrance of a small path to your left that meanders through the jungle up to Black Rock Viewpoint. If you continue to walk on the main trail past the path to the viewpoint, you’ll get to a beautiful cape named Laem Krating.
